What Memmingen Airport is like and who it suits

Allgäu Airport (code FMM) is located in the village of Memmingerberg, about 4.5 km from Memmingen train station. The terminal is small, and the buses are just a couple of minutes' walk from the exit: all stops are right in front of the building. From here it's easy to travel not only to Memmingen itself, but also to Munich, Augsburg, Ulm, Stuttgart and the resorts of the Allgäu region.

If you're comparing options, note that direct Chisinau - Munich tickets on our site start from €77. Flying to Memmingen and taking the bus to Munich usually works out cheaper, but the journey takes a couple of hours longer. For a trip to Stuttgart, there is also a direct Chisinau - Stuttgart flight from €30.

If you're continuing by train, here's a useful tip. Buy a ticket on bahn.de with "Memmingen Allgäu Airport" as the end point: the shuttle between the airport and the station is already included. For day trips around Bavaria on regional trains, there's the Bayern-Ticket: one ticket for a group of up to five people, with the price depending on the number of passengers.

Visa and passport for a trip to Memmingen

Citizens of Moldova with a biometric passport do not need a visa. Visa-free travel to the Schengen Area has been in place since 28 April 2014. The national ID card is not valid for this trip.

Permitted stay: 90 days in any 180-day period, across all Schengen countries combined. Your passport must remain valid for at least three months after departure. This limit matters if you fly to Bavaria often: all trips in the last six months count, not just the current one. Since April 2026, the EES system operates at the border: on your first entry, your fingerprints are scanned and your photo is taken. If your bus to Munich is booked for a specific time, leave a buffer after landing.

ETIAS is not in effect yet. There is no launch date, and when it starts, you will need to apply only through the official EU portal.

Money, mobile service and Sundays

The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted for online bus tickets, hotels and supermarkets. In the small towns of the Allgäu you'll need cash more often than in Munich: at the market, at the bakery, or for the bus driver. It's a good idea to bring some euros with you from Chisinau.

Your phone works just like at home: since 1 January 2026, Moldovan numbers have been covered by "roam like at home" rates in EU countries. Check your plan's terms with your operator.

Power sockets are the same as in Moldova. The main thing to remember: shops are closed on Sundays. If you arrive on a Friday, buy groceries for the weekend on Saturday.

We don't list accommodation and food costs here: they depend on where you're heading next and the season. Memmingen itself is usually cheaper than Munich, which is why some travellers stay overnight here before an early return flight.

What to bring back from Memmingen and the Allgäu to Moldova

The Allgäu is known for its dairy products and cheeses, above all Allgäuer Emmentaler and Allgäuer Bergkäse. For the journey, pick vacuum-packed hard cheese, and check Moldova's rules on importing animal products in advance. Besides cheese, the region brews beer, and local varieties are almost impossible to find in Chisinau.

Farm produce is easy to find at the weekly market on Marktplatz in Memmingen. It runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7:00 to 12:30, opening half an hour later from November to March. From 1 to 24 December the market moves to Schrannenplatz.

If you buy something expensive, claim a VAT refund. For residents of non-EU countries it's available on purchases of at least €50.01 in one shop on a single receipt. Ask for a Tax Free form at the till, and get it stamped by customs at the airport before checking in your luggage. The goods must be taken out of the EU within three months.

When travelling by air, Moldovan customs lets you bring in goods worth up to €430 per person duty-free. For alcohol: 1 litre of spirits (over 22%), 2 litres of weaker drinks, 2 litres of wine and 5 litres of beer. As the rules change from time to time, check them on customs.gov.md before you fly.

Memmingen and the surrounding area in a couple of days

Memmingen is known as the gateway to the Allgäu. You can explore the Old Town, with its preserved gates and city wall, in a few hours, and from here it's easy to continue by train: to Ulm, to Lindau on Lake Constance, or towards Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle. If you're planning several such trips, a Bayern-Ticket for the day is better value than buying separate tickets.
