Flights from Chisinau to Basel: direct Wizz Air flight from €29

Wizz Air flies direct from Chisinau to Basel. The flight takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, but in local time it comes out an hour shorter: Basel is one hour behind Chisinau. The plane lands at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, which is why searches and bookings sometimes list this route as Chisinau - Mulhouse. It is the same flight. Tickets start at €29, and the months with the lowest prices are shown in the calendar above.

Direct flight schedule Chisinau - Basel

The flight is operated by Wizz Air Malta, a subsidiary of Wizz Air. It doesn't fly every day, so it's better to plan your travel dates around the schedule rather than the other way round.

The early departure from Chisinau means you'll be in Basel at around 7:45 am with almost a full day ahead of you. Hotel check-in is usually later, so ask in advance whether you can leave your luggage. Days and times change from season to season, and the search on this page shows the current schedule.

If the direct flight doesn't work for your date, there are connecting flights, for example via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus. Another option is to fly to a nearby city. From Chisinau there are flights to Zurich, Strasbourg and Stuttgart, from where you can reach Basel by train.

What to know about Basel airport before you land

EuroAirport is located on French territory but serves three countries at once. Inside the terminal there is a Swiss sector and a French sector, and the exit you choose determines where you end up. Hence the three codes: BSL, MLH and EAP. Your Wizz Air ticket may show any of them, and that's normal.

  • Going to Basel: after passport control, follow the signs for the Swiss sector. The bus to the city leaves from there.
  • Going to Mulhouse, Colmar or Strasbourg: exit through the French sector, where there's a bus to Saint-Louis station.
  • Going to Freiburg: a direct bus leaves from the French sector once an hour and takes about an hour.
  • Money: ATMs in the Swiss sector dispense francs, those in the French sector dispense euros. Withdraw cash in the sector you're exiting through.
  • Return flight: for Wizz Air check-in, follow the signs for the Swiss sector.

How to get from the airport to central Basel and how much it costs

The easiest way is bus 50 to the main station, Basel SBB. It leaves from the arrivals exit of the Swiss sector every 7-10 minutes from about 4:30 until midnight and takes about 20 minutes.

OptionDestinationTravel timeCost
Bus 50Basel SBB stationabout 20 minutesCHF 6.60 (3-zone ticket)

Taxi (Swiss sector)central Baselabout 15-20 minutesabout CHF 50
Bus 11 (French sector)Saint-Louis station, then trains into France10-15 minutes€3 with an SMS ticket
Taxi (French sector)Mulhouse stationdepends on traffic€60-65 by day, €85-90 at night

Taxi fares are approximate and are quoted by the airport itself. The main saving here: if you've booked a hotel, hostel or apartment in Basel, your booking confirmation works as a free ticket from the airport to your accommodation. Keep it on your phone in case of an inspection. Without a booking, buy a 3-zone ticket from the machine before boarding. It's valid for 2 hours and lets you transfer to a tram. Travelling without a ticket carries a CHF 100 fine.

After check-in you'll receive a BaselCard. With it, all public transport in the city is free for the duration of your stay, including the trip back to the airport. It's only valid up to the border: trips into France or Germany are paid separately.

Do you need a visa for Basel and which passport to take

You don't need a visa if you hold a biometric passport of the Republic of Moldova. Basel is in the Schengen Area, and Moldovan citizens with such a passport have been travelling there visa-free since 28 April 2014. An internal passport or ID card is not valid for this trip.

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the days add up across all Schengen countries. Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after your departure date. The EES system operates at the border: on your first entry, your passport is scanned, your photo is taken and your fingerprints are recorded. Your first time through border control may take longer than you're used to, so don't plan a meeting right after landing.

A separate ETIAS authorisation is not required yet. Once the launch date is announced, apply only on the official EU portal, not through intermediary websites.

Francs, cards, mobile and sockets

In Basel you pay in Swiss francs (CHF). Many shops accept euros, but they give change in francs at a poor rate. Paying by Visa or Mastercard is the most convenient, and it's worth keeping a few francs for small purchases, for example at a market or kiosk.

Since 1 January 2026, Moldovan numbers roam at domestic rates in all 27 EU countries. Basel is not in the EU, so this rule does not apply there. At the same time, the airport is in France, and Germany and France begin right on the city's outskirts, so your phone may switch between networks of different countries on its own. Before your trip, check your plan with your operator or turn off data roaming and use Wi-Fi.

Sockets here are Swiss type J. A flat two-pin plug (like a phone charger) fits, but a thick round plug with grounding, like those on a hairdryer or laptop, does not. Bring an adapter for it.

On Sundays most shops in the centre are closed, and on Mondays many museums are closed. If you arrive on the Sunday flight, buy groceries at the station or do your shopping on Saturday.

Hotel and meal prices are intentionally left out of the table. They depend heavily on the dates: during Art Basel, Fasnacht and major trade fairs, accommodation gets more expensive and sells out fast. If you want to save money, first check whether your trip coincides with these events. With the BaselCard many museums and Rhine ferries are cheaper or free; check the terms when you check in.

What to bring back from Basel to Moldova

The main local souvenir is Basler Läckerli, a hard spiced honey biscuit with almonds, hazelnuts, candied peel and kirsch cherry brandy. The widest choice is at the Läckerli Huus flagship store at Gerbergasse 57 in the Old Town. It also sells other Basel sweets, and there's a small exhibition on the biscuit's history on the top floor. Läckerli travel well. If you need a big supply for gifts, the biscuits without the branded box are cheaper at Migros supermarkets, which also have a range of Swiss chocolate.

If you like markets, plan your walk around the days of the week:

  • Stadtmarkt on Marktplatz is usually open Tuesday to Saturday mornings, and longer on Friday and Saturday. The produce comes mostly from farmers in the border region of the three countries.
  • The flea market on Petersplatz takes place on Saturdays. It doesn't run during the Herbstmesse autumn fair and returns at the end of November.
  • The flea market on Barfüsserplatz is held on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, except on public holidays and during Herbstmesse and the Christmas market.

Bring Swiss francs in cash to the market: not every vendor has a card terminal.

Non-residents can reclaim Swiss VAT (8.1%) if they spend at least CHF 300 in one shop on one day. Ask for a Tax Free form at the till, and when you fly out, get it stamped by customs before checking in your purchases. The goods must be exported within 30 days.

Back home, Moldovan duty-free allowances apply. According to the Customs Service, when travelling by air you can bring goods worth up to €430 per person, and in terms of alcohol, 1 litre of spirits (over 22%), 2 litres of weaker drinks, 2 litres of wine and 5 litres of beer. The rules change from time to time, so check them on customs.gov.md before your flight.

Summer, May to SeptemberSwimming in the RhineLocals put their clothes in a Wickelfisch bag and float downstream past the Old Town. Only go in when the water is above 18°C and only if you're a strong swimmer. A convenient entry point: Schaffhauserrheinweg 93, below the Tinguely Museum

Fasnacht 2027 starts on a Monday, and under the current schedule the direct flight arrives on Sunday morning. If the schedule stays the same, this is the easiest way to catch the Morgestraich without travelling overnight. For a calmer view of the procession, choose Münsterplatz or Nadelberg instead of the crowded Marktplatz.

Basel in two or three days: what to fit in between flights

The centre is compact: from Basel SBB station you can walk to the Old Town or get there by tram in a few minutes. The Rhine divides the city into Grossbasel, with the Münster cathedral and the town hall, and the livelier Kleinbasel on the other bank, where bars open right by the water in summer. Small motorless ferries cross between the banks, carried by the current. The border is close: tram 3 runs to Saint-Louis in France, so you can easily visit two countries in one day. Just remember that the BaselCard is not valid across the border.
