For one or two people with suitcases, the Leonardo Express is almost always more cost-effective than a taxi. The taxi's fixed fare only starts to pay off for a group of 3-4 people.

Visa and passport for a trip to Rome

No visa is needed. Italy is part of the Schengen area, and citizens of Moldova with a biometric passport can stay there without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The rule has been in effect since April 28, 2014 and applies to tourist and business trips.

A biometric passport specifically is mandatory; a regular Moldovan ID card is not valid for entering Italy. The passport's validity must end no earlier than 3 months after the return date. At the border you're sometimes asked for a return ticket, accommodation booking and confirmation of sufficient funds for the trip.

One practical thing that often disrupts plans: August 15, Ferragosto, a national holiday, and the whole week around it. Many small family-run restaurants and shops are closed during these days, and Romans themselves leave the city en masse. If you're flying in mid-August, check the opening hours of specific places in advance rather than relying on a general schedule.

What to bring back from Rome

For wine, it's worth looking not at the shop windows near the station but for bottles marked Frascati DOC, a wine from the Castelli Romani, the hilly area south of the city where winemaking has been practiced for centuries. Olive oil marked Sabina DOP, from the region north of Rome, is also a genuine local product rather than a souvenir brought in under an Italian brand.

For leather goods and vintage items at reasonable prices, it's worth going to the Sunday market at Porta Portese in Trastevere rather than the tourist shops near the Spanish Steps: prices there are noticeably lower for similar quality.
