Which airlines fly from Chisinau to Düsseldorf

Two airlines currently offer a direct flight, and a third will join the route in summer 2027.

AirlineStatus on the routeWhat to keep in mind
FlyOneDirect flights operating nowUsually has more flights per week than its competitor. The schedule includes an early departure from Chisinau at around 5:30
HiSky (HiSky Europe)Direct flights operating nowAccording to search engines, one or two flights per week, so it is better to check a convenient date in advance
SkyUpThe Chisinau - Düsseldorf flight is included in the summer 2027 programme, ticket sales are openDoes not currently fly this route. Check the date of the first flight when booking

If there is no direct flight on the day you need, connecting flights remain: via Vienna (Austrian), Warsaw (LOT), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus) or Frankfurt (Lufthansa). The journey then takes about six hours instead of two and a half. The schedule changes with the season, so check the dates before buying.

How to get from Düsseldorf airport to the city

The airport is within the city limits, and you can reach the central station (Hauptbahnhof) in 12-20 minutes by any means.

OptionDestinationTravel timeCost
S-Bahn S11Hauptbahnhofabout 12 minutes€3.80 per ticket
Metro U80 (from Terminal C)Hauptbahnhof, no changesabout 18 minutes€3.80 per ticket
TaxiHauptbahnhofabout 20 minutesabout €34
Taxicity centreabout 15 minutesabout €32

Taxi prices are approximate; they are quoted by the airport itself with no guarantee. The S11 and U80 stops are right by the terminal, so it is easier to travel by them with suitcases. The SkyTrain, an automated suspended railway, is for those transferring to a regional train at Flughafen station: luggage trolleys are not allowed on it.

A trip within the city falls under price tier A, the ticket is sold at a machine, and a paper ticket must be validated before boarding. The U80 runs roughly every 20 minutes, and on Sundays and at off-peak times every 30. The first trains reach the airport just after 4 a.m., and the last one departs around 1 a.m. If you arrive later than that, a taxi is your option.

Do you need a visa and a passport for a trip from Chisinau

No visa is needed, but a passport is required, and it must be biometric. Citizens of Moldova with such a passport have travelled to Schengen countries visa-free since 28 April 2014.

You may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the days are counted cumulatively across all Schengen countries. The passport must be valid for at least 3 more months after your return date. Always carry the document with you rather than leaving it at the hotel: the authorities may check it at any moment.

Since 10 April 2026 the EES system has been operating at the border. On first entry the passport is scanned, your face is photographed, and adults and children from the age of 12 have the fingerprints of four fingers taken. The queue at passport control may be longer than usual, so do not schedule a meeting or a transfer for the first minutes after landing.

A separate ETIAS authorisation is not required yet. Its launch has been postponed, there is no official date, and 2027 is mentioned most often. When the date is announced, you should apply for it only on the official portal travel-europe.europa.eu (the expected fee is €20): intermediary sites charge extra.

Currency and payment: how much cash to take

Düsseldorf pays in euros. Be sure to take a Visa or Mastercard card: it is convenient for paying at the hotel, the supermarket, shops and on transport. But it is better to keep cash on hand: bakeries, small cafés, kiosks and markets often accept only cash or the local Girocard, which residents of the country have. A few tens of euros in your wallet will save you an extra trip to the ATM.

The opposite also happens: tickets to the Rheinturm are sold by card only, and cash is no longer accepted there. It is easier to buy euros at home before departure or withdraw them from a bank's ATM rather than from a standalone machine in a tourist spot, where the fee is higher. Ask your own bank about withdrawal and conversion terms.

How much a trip costs: approximate expenses on the spot

ExpenseGuideComment
Single transport ticket€3.80VRR fare, price tier A, valid from 1 June 2026
Day ticket€7.60Equal to the price of two single tickets, so it pays off with three or more trips
Altbier 0.25 l in a brewery pub€2.90-3.05Füchschen and Uerige, February 2026. During carnival days at Schumacher and Zum Schlüssel up to €3.30
Art:walk pass€2548 hours, includes Kunstpalast, K20/K21, Kunsthalle, NRW-Forum and KIT. Museums are closed on Mondays

I deliberately left the cost of a hotel and an ordinary lunch out of the table: the spread between districts and seasons is too wide, so it is more honest to check the price for your own date. But you can find out in advance when rooms sell out faster. These are the days of the major Messe Düsseldorf trade fairs: boot from 23 to 31 January 2027 and ProWein from 7 to 9 March 2027. Check your dates against the trade fair calendar before buying a ticket.

What to bring back from Düsseldorf to Moldova

The most practical souvenir here is mustard. The original A.B.B. Mostert is made to a recipe from 1726, and the Löwensenf shop (Senfladen) in the Altstadt has a mini-museum and tasting: altbier, fig, coconut with curry. Among drinks, people take Killepitsch (42%, more than 90 herbs) and cherry Krumme, and among sweets the Radschläger chocolate from the Heinemann confectioner's. Killepitsch is sold at Et Kabüffke at Flingerstraße 1 and in the shop next door.

Food is cheaper and more varied at the Carlsplatz market: there are more than 60 stalls, including tea, spices, cheeses, spirits and mustard in jars that fit in a suitcase. The market is open Monday to Friday from 8 to 18, on Saturday from 8 to 16, and closed on Sunday. Take cash: payment methods vary between vendors. And put glass jars and bottles in your checked luggage rather than your carry-on, making sure the weight fits within your fare.

Work out the import allowance in advance. According to the Customs Service of Moldova, when travelling by air you may bring in duty-free goods worth up to €430 per person and alcohol: 1 litre of spirits (above 22%) or 2 litres of weaker drinks, plus 2 litres of still wine and 5 litres of beer. Killepitsch falls under the limit for strong alcohol. The rules may change, so check the customs.gov.md website before departure.

German VAT can be refunded to residents of non-EU countries, including Moldova. The purchase must be from €50.01 in one shop on one receipt. At the till, ask for an Ausfuhrbescheinigung or Tax Free Shopping Check form, and before departure have it stamped by customs (Zoll) at the airport, before checking in your luggage if the goods are in your suitcase. You must take the purchases out of the country within three months. If you fly home on a direct flight, the stamp is applied by customs in Düsseldorf.

Düsseldorf in two or three days: what you can fit in

The centre is compact, and you can cover most of it on foot. The Altstadt has about 260 pubs, breweries and restaurants in an area of less than half a kilometre, which is why it is called "the longest bar in the world". From it, it is ten minutes to Königsallee, a luxurious boulevard with a canal, and along the Rhine you can walk to the Medienhafen, where the Frank Gehry buildings stand. Do not leave the museums for Monday: they are closed.
