Getting to town

The AirTrain runs around the clock between JFK's five terminals, and rides within the airport are free. To reach the city, get off at Jamaica or Howard Beach station, where you can connect to the subway (E, J, Z lines at Jamaica, or the A line at Howard Beach) or to the Long Island Rail Road commuter train. Exiting the AirTrain system at Jamaica or Howard Beach is charged separately from the subway fare, paid by tapping a contactless card or OMNY at the turnstiles. The LIRR is the fastest way into Manhattan but also the most expensive; the subway is the cheapest option, though the ride takes longer.

About the city

New York is made up of five boroughs, each with its own character: Manhattan is the financial and cultural core, Brooklyn and Queens are large residential areas with diverse communities, the Bronx is home to the zoo and Yankee Stadium, and Staten Island remains the least densely populated of the five.

The city was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 under the name New Amsterdam, before coming under British rule and being renamed New York.
