For the metro you will need a nol card: the Silver card costs AED 25, with AED 19 loaded as credit. You cannot pay with cash or a bank card at the gates. Buy the card at ticket offices and machines in the stations; it also works on buses and the tram.

The most atmospheric shopping is not in the malls but in Deira. The Gold Souk and the Spice Souk are right next to each other here, and wooden abra boats cross Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. At the Spice Souk, people buy saffron, dried limes and frankincense, while nearby stalls sell oud and Arabian perfumes. Buy dates in specialist shops, where they will pack them in gift boxes for you.

A word of caution about gold: jewellery counts towards the general duty-free allowance when entering Moldova, which is €430 per person by air. Declare any expensive purchase to avoid questions at customs.
