2. Baggage Rules

This is the most common question from our clients. AZAL uses the piece concept — which means both weight and number of bags are limited.

Carry-on and Checked Baggage

Below is the table of allowances for standard economy fares.

Important baggage nuances:

• How much does it cost to add extra baggage?
  If your fare does not include baggage or you need an additional suitcase, the cost starts from 50 EUR per bag (up to 23 kg) when paid in advance. At the airport, the price will be higher (up to 60–70 EUR).
  Note: Prices depend on the direction and flight zone.
• Can baggage be combined?
  No. Since the piece concept applies, you cannot combine weight. For example, if you and your spouse each have 23 kg, you cannot check in one suitcase of 30 kg and one of 16 kg. A suitcase heavier than 23 kg (in economy) will be considered oversized and require an extra fee.
• Liquids and laptops:
  • Liquids: In carry-on — containers no more than 100 ml, packed in one transparent 1 L bag.
  • Laptops: Must be carried only in carry-on baggage. They must be removed during security screening.
• Sports equipment (skis, bicycles):
  Ski equipment or bicycles are usually not included in the free allowance (unless part of a seasonal promotion).
  • Cost: from 50 EUR per set/piece one way.
  • Bicycle must be packed in a case/box, handlebars turned, pedals removed.

3. Check-in

To avoid delays and choose better seats, follow these rules.

• Online check-in:
  • Opens 24 hours before departure.
  • Closes 60 minutes before departure.
  • Seat selection during online check-in may be paid (depending on fare). Often free at the start of check-in.
• Boarding pass:
  In Chisinau and Baku, electronic boarding passes (QR code on phone) are accepted. However, we at zbor.md always recommend saving the PDF version or printing it in case of phone malfunction or airport security requirements.
• Airport check-in:
  With Azerbaijan Airlines, airport counter check-in is generally free. This is a major advantage compared to low-cost carriers. Counters close strictly 60 minutes before departure.

4. Managing Booking and Refunds

Life is unpredictable, and plans may change. Here is how AZAL handles changes.

• Date or route change:
  The ability to change depends on your fare ("Budget", "Standard", "Classic", "Plus").
  • The cheapest fares often cannot be changed or the penalty exceeds the ticket price.
  • Standard fares: penalty (usually from 50–70 EUR) + fare difference.
• Mistake in name/surname:
  Up to 3 errors are allowed if they do not alter pronunciation or meaning (e.g., Aleksandr instead of Alexander). If the error is significant or the passenger must be changed entirely — this is prohibited (a new ticket must be purchased).
• Flight cancellation by the airline:
  If the flight is canceled due to AZAL (technical issue, scheduling), you are entitled to:
  1. Full refund.
  2. Free rebooking to the nearest available date.

5. Children, Pets, and Special Services

AZAL is a traditional airline, so the range of services is wide.

Children

• Children (2–12 years): Require a separate ticket and seat. The discount is usually 25% off the fare (taxes fully paid).
• Unaccompanied minor service (UMNR):
  • Mandatory for children 5–14 years old traveling alone.
  • Service is paid (about 50–60 EUR per segment). Must be requested at least 24 hours before departure.

Pets

Transportation requires prior confirmation!

• In cabin (PETC): Animal + carrier weight — up to 8 kg. Carrier size: max 55x40x20 cm. Cost: from 50 EUR.
• In baggage hold (AVIH): If weight exceeds 8 kg. Cost depends on total weight and dimensions.

Meals

On Azerbaijan Airlines flights, hot meals and drinks are typically provided free of charge, even in economy (except the shortest flights).
