Flights from Azerbaijan to Chisinau

Chisinau - Baku flights: direct AZAL and FlyOne routes

You can fly from Chisinau to Baku without a layover: two airlines operate the route, Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and FlyOne. A Chisinau - Baku flight spends about 3 hours 10 minutes in the air, and the distance between the cities is just over 1,800 km. That is shorter than a flight to Lisbon, yet you land in a completely different culture where citizens of Moldova do not need a visa.

Below we have gathered everything worth checking before you buy: how the airlines differ, when Chisinau Baku flights are cheaper, which documents you need, and how to get into the city from the airport if your flight lands at night.

Who operates Chisinau - Baku flights

AZAL has flown this route for a long time and is based in Baku. FlyOne launched its direct Chisinau - Baku flight only recently: the first departure took place on 16 July 2026. The airlines follow different business models, so the same price on screen does not always mean the same conditions.

The weekly schedule changes from season to season, and different sources list different operating days for FlyOne. That is why it is best to check exact dates directly in the search: choose a month and you will see all Chisinau Baku flights with current departure times.

If Baku is only a transfer point for you, take a look at AZAL connections: from Chisinau via Baku it is easy to reach Central Asia. We explain how we build such routes on our "Smart Connections" page.

When Chisinau Baku flights are cheaper

Right now, a Chisinau Baku ticket starts from €72. If you look at the price calendar above, you will see a clear seasonal pattern: the lowest fares fall in December, January and February, while prices rise noticeably in spring. The most expensive month is September, when Baku hosts its Formula 1 round and the city fills with visitors.

Practical tip: if your dates are flexible, start your search with the winter months. Winter in Baku is cool and often windy, but that is no obstacle for walks or a food-focused trip. Meanwhile, Chisinau Baku flight prices are at their lowest during this period, and you can save significantly on a return flight.

Visa and passport: what citizens of Moldova need

Moldova and Azerbaijan have a mutual visa-free regime. There is no need to apply separately for a visa or an electronic permit.

QuestionAnswer
Is a visa requiredNo, visa-free stay of up to 90 days
Which document is neededA valid Moldovan passport for travel abroad. The national ID card is not sufficient for this trip
Passport validityRequirements differ between sources, so it is safer to travel with a passport valid for at least 3-6 months after your return
RegistrationIf you stay longer than 15 days, free registration at your place of stay with the State Migration Service is required. Usually the hotel or the property owner handles it, but you can also apply yourself
ChildrenEach child needs their own passport

If you plan to stay in Azerbaijan for more than two weeks and are renting an apartment, check with the owner in advance who will take care of registration. There is a fine for failing to register.

Heydar Aliyev Airport: how to get into the city after landing

All flights from Chisinau to Baku land at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (code GYD). It is about 25 km from the city centre. There is no metro at the airport, but a 24-hour express bus runs to the 28 May metro station and the railway station.

OptionCostTravel timeWhen it works best
Aeroexpress H1 bus1.30 AZNAbout 30 minutesAlmost always: runs 24/7, every 20 minutes during the day and every 45 minutes at night
Bolt via the appUsually 22-30 AZN, depending on demand25-35 minutesAt night, with luggage or in a group
Taxi at the terminalUsually from 30 AZN25-35 minutesWhen you have no connection for the app. Agree on the price before getting in

For the H1 bus you need a BakıKart transport card: vending machines are located at the terminal exits, the card itself costs 2 AZN, and rides are topped up on its balance. One card can be used by the whole group, just tap it on the validator as many times as needed. In 2026, Baku's public transport also started accepting contactless bank cards, but BakıKart is still more reliable and cheaper per ride.

This matters especially for passengers on FlyOne's evening flight: the plane lands in Baku at night, and you will not have to wait until morning. The H1 keeps running, and Bolt is available at the airport around the clock.

Money, time and connectivity

  • Currency. Azerbaijani manat (AZN). The rate is pegged to the dollar: 1 USD is roughly 1.70 AZN. Euros and dollars are easily exchanged at the airport, banks and exchange offices. Bring intact banknotes without any writing on them, as worn notes may be refused.
  • Cards. In Baku you can pay by card in most cafés, shops and taxi apps. At markets and in small shops cash is more convenient, so keep some 1 and 5 manat notes on hand.
  • Time difference. Baku is 2 hours ahead of Chisinau in winter and 1 hour ahead in summer: Azerbaijan does not change its clocks. When buying a ticket, remember that departure and arrival times are shown in local time.
  • Cash at the border. Amounts exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 dollars must be declared on entry.

How much money to budget for the trip

Baku remains one of the more affordable capitals in the region, especially when it comes to transport costs. The prices below will help you estimate your on-the-ground budget, excluding flights and accommodation.

ExpenseApproximate cost
Metro or city bus ride0.60 AZN
H1 bus from the airport1.30 AZN
BakıKart card2 AZN, one-off
Bolt from the airport to the centre22-30 AZN
Minimum daily budget (food, transport, excluding accommodation)About 30 AZN

The metro runs roughly from 6:00 until midnight. In the centre it is easy to get around on foot and by metro, while Bolt comes in handy in the evening and for trips out of town.

What to bring back from Baku to Moldova

The best things to buy in Baku are those you cannot find in Chisinau or that cost noticeably more here. Here is what is really worth bringing home.

What to buyWhere to lookWhat to keep in mind
Armudu glasses and teaMarkets, souvenir shopsThese pear-shaped tea glasses are found in every Baku home, and together with local tea they make a ready-made gift
Narsharab (pomegranate sauce)Markets, grocery storesA sweet-and-sour sauce for meat and fish, rarely found in Moldova
Baklava and shekerburaPastry shops in the centreMany sell them in gift packaging designed for air travel
Saffron, dried fruit, nutsTeze Bazar marketTaste before buying and compare prices at several stalls
Kelaghayi silk scarfSouvenir shopsA light, compact souvenir; the tradition of making it is on the UNESCO list
CarpetShops in Icherisheher, the Carpet MuseumExporting even a new carpet requires a certificate. It is issued with purchases from official shops or can be obtained at the Carpet Museum

A separate note on delicacies: you can take up to 125 g of black caviar and up to 5 kg of sturgeon out of Azerbaijan duty-free. Buy caviar only in shops with a receipt, as it is easy to run into fakes at the market.

When returning to Chisinau by air, personal belongings and purchases worth up to €430 per person are brought in duty-free. If you are carrying a carpet or jewellery, keep the receipts, as you will need them at customs.

How to shop at Baku's markets

  • Teze Bazar is the market where locals themselves go for fresh fruit, herbs, spices and dried fruit. It is best to go in the morning, when the choice is wider.
  • Sadarak is a huge market on the outskirts where people buy wholesale. It is worth the trip if you want to see local life without tourists and buy a lot at low prices.
  • Bargaining at the market is normal, especially if you are buying several items at once.
  • Vendors often offer tea. It is part of the conversation, not an obligation to buy anything.
  • In some souvenir shops you may be told the card terminal is not working so they can get cash. If you want to pay by card, simply go to the shop next door.

Unusual dates for a trip to Baku

Chisinau Baku flights make it possible to plan a short trip around an event you will not see in Moldova.

  • Novruz, around 20-21 March. Azerbaijan's main holiday, celebrating the arrival of spring. Officially it lasts five days, and the government announces the exact dates in December of the previous year. On the Tuesdays before the holiday, bonfires are lit in courtyards and people jump over the flames, while streets sell sweets and sprouted wheat called semeni.
  • New Year fair on the Boulevard, from mid-December to mid-January. The seafront turns into a winter fair with Christmas trees, garlands and treats. The bonus is that it coincides with the cheapest period for flights.
  • Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, September. The race runs through the city streets along the old fortress walls. In 2026 it took place on 24-26 September. If you want to attend the next round, follow the official F1 calendar and book your flights early: demand and prices on these dates are the highest of the year.
