When to book tickets from Chisinau to Copenhagen
Prices vary a lot by month. From November to March fares stay at their lowest, in April-July they rise by about ten euros, and in August a ticket costs more than twice as much as in spring. September and October are transition months.
The flight does not operate every day. Before booking time off, open the month you need in the search and check which days have outbound and return flights: dates may not line up for a short weekend.
Unusual trips: dates worth planning your tickets around
The cheapest months coincide with two strong reasons to fly in winter: Christmas at Tivoli and the light festival. In February it gets dark in Copenhagen around 16:45, and the light installations are switched on from 17:00 to 22:00, so the short day actually works in your favour here.
| When | What's on | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|---|
| 9 October 2026, 18:00-24:00 | Kulturnatten, Culture Night | More than 200 museums, theatres, churches and ministries open in the evening with a single Kulturpas (125 DKK), which includes free public transport |
| 2 October - 1 November 2026 | Halloween at Tivoli | The park is decorated with thousands of pumpkins, rides are open and there are two haunted houses |
| Mid-November - early January | Christmas at Tivoli | Christmas market, skating rink on the park's lake, gløgg and æbleskiver; falls in the months with the lowest ticket prices |
| 29 January - 21 February 2027 | Copenhagen Light Festival, 10th edition | More than 30 light works along the harbour and in the centre, the route is free |
| 23 June, evening | Sankt Hans, midsummer celebration | Bonfires by the water, the longest day of the year |
| Late April - October | Outdoor flea market season | The best time to hunt for vintage Danish porcelain and design |
Another option not tied to dates: the 24-hour City Pass Large covers zones 1-99, including Helsingør. The train from Central Station gets there in under an hour, and Helsingør is home to Kronborg Castle, the setting of "Hamlet".
Do you need a visa and passport to fly to Copenhagen
Moldovan citizens do not need a visa if they hold a biometric passport. The Schengen visa-free regime allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and days spent in other Schengen countries count towards the same limit. You will not be allowed to board this flight with a Moldovan ID card; you need a passport. It must be valid for at least three months after the date you leave Schengen and must have been issued within the last 10 years.
Since 10 April 2026, the EES system has been in operation at all external Schengen borders. The flight from Chisinau arrives from outside Schengen, so at Kastrup you go through passport control, and on your first entry your fingerprints and photo will be taken. Your exit is also recorded on the way back, so allow extra time at the airport.
The ETIAS authorisation has not yet been launched at the time of publication. The EU will announce the start date in advance on travel-europe.europa.eu. Websites that already "issue ETIAS" for a fee are not official.
Border guards may ask for a return ticket, an accommodation booking and proof of funds. Danish authorities use a guideline of 350 DKK per day if you stay with friends and 500 DKK per day if you stay in a hotel, roughly €47 and €67. If you also hold a Romanian passport, travel on it: EU citizens go through border control under separate rules and are not registered in EES.
How to get from Copenhagen Airport to the city and how much it costs
Kastrup Airport is on the island of Amager, 8 km from the centre. The metro and trains depart from Terminal 3, which is connected to Terminal 2 by a covered walkway. Metro line M2 runs 24/7, every 15-20 minutes at night.
| Option | From | Time to centre | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro M2 | Terminal 3 | 13-15 min | Hotels near Kongens Nytorv, Nørreport, Frederiksberg stations; late arrivals |
| DSB train | Terminal 3 | About 13 min to Central Station (København H) | Accommodation near the station or in Vesterbro |
| Bus 5C | Terminal 3 | 30-45 min | Accommodation along the route through Amager, away from metro stations |
| Taxi | Taxi rank at Terminal 3 | 20-30 min | Lots of luggage, night-time, groups of 3-4 |
The metro, train and bus all use the same 3-zone ticket, which costs about 30 DKK, roughly €4. The easiest way to buy it is in the Rejsebillet app or from a ticket machine at the station. The plastic Rejsekort cards recommended by older guidebooks were withdrawn on 29 June 2026. There are no turnstiles on the metro, but inspectors check regularly, and the fine for travelling without a ticket runs into hundreds of kroner.
If you plan more than three journeys on your first day, the City Pass Small is better value: 100 DKK for 24 hours, zones 1-4 including the airport. A metered taxi to the centre costs 250-350 DKK depending on the address and traffic. Fares differ between companies, and each is required to display its rates on the car window.
What currency to take to Copenhagen
Bring a card rather than cash. Copenhagen uses the Danish krone (DKK); the euro is not the main currency here. The krone is pegged to the euro and has stayed at around 7.46 DKK to €1 for years, so conversion is easy: 100 kroner is roughly €13.40.
Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere, from the metro to street kiosks. When a terminal offers to charge you in lei or euros, choose to pay in DKK: the terminal's exchange rate is usually worse than your bank's. It's worth having a small amount of cash in kroner for flea markets. Locals there often pay with MobilePay, but the app is generally not available to tourists with a Moldovan card.
Approximate costs in Copenhagen
Copenhagen is noticeably more expensive than Chisinau, especially cafés and bars. Supermarket groceries are closer to what you're used to. Below are average prices from Numbeo for September 2026, converted to euros.
| Item | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Lunch at an inexpensive café | €20 |
| Three-course dinner for two, without drinks | €107 |
| Fast-food combo meal | €12 |
| Cappuccino | €6 |
| Pint of local beer in a bar | €8 |
| 1.5 l water at a supermarket | €1.30 |
| 0.5 l beer at a supermarket | €1.60 |
| City Pass Small, 24 hours | €13.40 (100 DKK) |
These figures give two daily scenarios, excluding accommodation and museums. A budget day, with breakfast and dinner from the supermarket and lunch at a café, comes to about €45. With coffee, lunch and dinner at restaurants, it's around €90. Tap water in Copenhagen is safe to drink, so there's no need to buy bottled water. The Netto, Rema 1000 and Lidl chains help you save. Cans and bottles carry a deposit (pant), which you get back from machines in the same supermarkets.
What to bring back from Copenhagen to Moldova
It's best to bring things you can't find in Chisinau or that cost noticeably more there:
- Liquorice. Danes eat it sweet, salty and with salmiak, in chocolate and with pepper. Lakrids by Bülow's signature jars travel well and make good gifts.
- Anthon Berg marzipan and chocolate. A classic Danish souvenir, sold in every large supermarket and at the airport.
- Akvavit. Scandinavian caraway spirit; the best-known brand is Aalborg. Keep the alcohol import allowance in mind.
- Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl porcelain. New pieces are expensive, but vintage cups and plates at flea markets cost several times less than in shops. Genuine Royal Copenhagen can be recognised by the three blue waves mark on the bottom.
- Danish design items: tableware, textiles, lamps. Markets often have mid-century teak pieces.
Don't put porcelain in checked luggage without sturdy packaging. Not much fits into Wizz Air's free 40×30×20 cm bag, so if you plan to shop, add cabin or checked baggage when you buy your ticket: it's more expensive at the airport.
Tax free and import allowances for Moldova
With a Moldovan passport you count as a non-EU resident and can reclaim part of the VAT. The conditions are: a purchase of at least 300 DKK in a single participating shop, a tax-free receipt issued against your passport, and export of the goods from the EU by the end of the third month after purchase. The flight to Chisinau leaves the EU, so you get the stamp right at Kastrup: Global Blue and Planet counters are in Terminals 2 and 3. You usually get back 10-19% of the amount; the rest goes on operator fees.
When entering Moldova, air passengers can bring in goods worth up to €430 per person duty-free. Separate limits apply to alcohol and tobacco; the current list is published by the Customs Service at customs.gov.md.
How to shop at flea markets
Outdoor markets run roughly from late April to October, mostly on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturdays a large market takes place on Israels Plads, right next to the Torvehallerne covered food hall, which is also a handy place for a bite. The antiques market is held on Fridays at Thorvaldsens Plads and moves to nearby Gammel Strand at weekends. In Nørrebro, on Saturdays, sellers line up along the wall of Assistens Cemetery. If you're flying in the low season, from November to March, look for indoor markets such as Remisen, which open at weekends whatever the weather.
Arrive at opening time: furniture and good porcelain are snapped up in the first few hours. Haggling is normal, especially near closing time. Turn tableware over to check the mark, and inspect chips and cracks against the light.
Copenhagen or a nearby airport
Copenhagen is convenient if your trip centres on the city itself and the east coast. For a trip to Legoland, Chisinau - Billund flights are closer: the airport is right next to the park. If your route is flexible and includes northern Germany, compare prices with the Chisinau - Hamburg route.
