Calgary is one of the safest major tourist destinations in Canada. Canada holds a Level 1 advisory from the US State Department, the lowest possible, and Calgary reflects this trend with a violent crime rate comparable to American cities of just 300,000 people, even though Calgary has 1.25 million. Around 82% of tourists feel safe visiting Calgary, and 88 out of 100 residents and visitors feel completely safe during the day. The main tourist areas (Stephen Avenue Walk, Calgary Tower, city centre, Princes Island Park, Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park) are safe and busy. The main risks for tourists are car break-ins (do not leave visible items), catalytic converter theft, and occasional aggressive behaviour by vulnerable individuals in East Village and near the Drop-In Centre shelter. Winters in Calgary are severe, with temperatures that can drop below -25°C and icy roads. Alberta is vulnerable to wildfires (May to August) and seasonal flooding. Calgary is the ideal starting point for Banff, Lake Louise, and the Rocky Mountains. Book your ticket and discover Canada's sunniest major city.
