Bari as a flight destination

In 1087, sailors from Bari brought the relics of Saint Nicholas from Myra to the city, and construction of the Basilica di San Nicola to house them began that same year. The basilica's crypt, at the heart of the old town, remains one of the city's main landmarks.

Getting to town

The railway station sits right inside the airport, at the end of a roughly 300-metre pedestrian tunnel reached from the arrivals area. Ferrotramviaria trains run every 20-30 minutes and reach Bari Centrale in about 17 minutes. Tickets are sold at the station's machines or online through Ferrotramviaria. A bus connection also exists, but the ride takes noticeably longer than the train.

About the city

Bari is the capital of the Apulia region and the second most important economic centre of mainland southern Italy after Naples. The city has an active port on the Adriatic coast, and its historic quarter, Bari Vecchia, grew up around the Basilica di San Nicola and the castle rebuilt under Frederick II.

The newer part of the city, known as the Murat district, begins a short walk from the old town and follows a 19th-century street plan of straight avenues and squares.
