Chisinau International Airport Renamed in Honor of Maestro Eugen Doga

Chișinău International Airport to Bear the Name of the Great Composer Eugen Doga

The Government of the Republic of Moldova has officially approved the renaming of Chișinău International Airport to Eugen Doga International Airport, in memory of the maestro of Moldovan and Romanian music. The decision, made during the July 16 session, is a tribute to a personality who deeply influenced the culture and national identity.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, stated that this change symbolizes the gratitude of the entire country towards Eugen Doga, a creator who united generations and communities through his unmistakable music. Thus, the airport becomes a cultural gateway for the Republic of Moldova.

Maestro Eugen Doga passed away on June 3, 2025, and his funeral was marked by an emotional ceremony at the "Nicolae Sulac" National Palace, attended by hundreds of people from the country’s cultural and political society. Although President Maia Sandu and Speaker Igor Grosu were absent, several officials and artists expressed their condolences.

The Ministry of Culture sent a solemn farewell message, and Maia Sandu announced the declaration of the funeral day as a national day of mourning. Additionally, a minor communication mistake drew attention when the title of one of Doga’s famous waltzes was mistranslated into Russian in an official statement, a situation quickly corrected.

Artists and public figures sent condolence messages, emphasizing the importance of Eugen Doga’s work for Moldovan and international music and culture.

Through this decision, the Republic of Moldova keeps alive the memory of a music legend, and Chișinău International Airport becomes a symbol of the cultural heritage built by the maestro.
